The Colours of Mind

The old and the unfamiliar is often incorrectly interpreted by writers. For example, European writers a hundred years ago, latching on to a children's story in the Puranas, declared that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are Gods of Creation, Preservation, and Destruction, respectively. Indians who learn about Hinduism from secondary sources and school texts have internalized this “meaning”, no matter how stupid it is to believe that people in the past, any more than people now, would want to worship God of Destruction. It is somewhat like being taught in a serious book that Santa Claus visits Earth from the North Pole on Christmas day.... Expand

"If varNa is a state of mind, why should krishna have tried to prevent varNasaMkara ?"

Mr. Rao,

You probably need to read Gita carefully. Krishna infact counters Arjuna when Arjuna laments Varnasankara. Krishna therefore does not give two hoots about Varnasamkara. This is in Chapter 1.

If varNa is a state of mind, it changes with time. Then why do we find krishna advising arjuna to stick to his kshAtra-dharma which is the dharma of a kshatriya? Why do we find any words in the scriptures advising people to stick to their varNAshramadharma?

If varNa is a state of mind, why should krishna have tried to prevent varNasaMkara?

The words 'Jati' and Rastra -'Desh' have different and special meaning in "Spiritual Political Science".Jati is that innate quality of instruction and aspiration   with which every Human Consciousness is born and embodied with the mortal body. .Similar kinds of "Jati"-Humans- together ,constitute a "Rastra" ,unlike and different than the concept of Nation as defined or shaped by Mazzini of Italy.Desh is a location on Earth or in cosmos ,where a Human with a specific 'Jati' is placed and lives and works -mainly to give expression to his spiritual aspirations.now Nature has this structural arrangements ,but unawakened Human Souls may or may not realise this Truth and sqander their opportunities of enhansing their consciousness on this Unique field. The World still has not understood this 'Intelligent Design',hence the chaos and cofusion in reading the true colours of mind.Y.R.sane e-mail yrsane@eth.net 19th Feb 2006.India-Thane-400601

Hi Subhash,

May be your description of varna is probably right or was the actual intended or could be a self-gratifying explanation of the caste based discrimination from time immemorial and blame the whole issue at the feet of portugese/british for introducing the terms.

However the fact does remain that Caste-based discrimination was/is prevalent from centuries right thru all the yugas. Didn't Ram kill the Shudra for doing tapasya? Didn't Sanakaracharya talk badly to the Shiva who came in the form of untouchable? This only shows whatever the vedic texts say, if the immediate audience couldn't comprehend the issue in right way, it doesn't make any sense in justifying the caste based system and how it should have been.

I would stick with every soul is a abode of God and everything goes to him at the end. All are one and same and should be treated so. At the end of the day everyone is a Human, comes into the world sameway and goes away similarly. Why bother categorising the intermediate phase where none matters at the end?

Interesting topic with some striking responses. I have one main comment to make: that it is very hard to guess the origins of some of these customs and whether they were originally progressive or not.

Whether or not caste was originally some kind of indicator of profession (some evidence of that seems to be there), it is almost impossible to evaluate whether it had a progressive role when introduced. For example, kings used to routinely murder vast parts of a population after conquest --- was creation of a caste used to avoid this type of genocide? We dont really know, except that survival of incredible diversity of population in india is fact (vs. europe for example).

Also, using arguments about human rights etc, for events thousand-years ago is sort of nonsensical. These ideas are mostly developed in the last 250 years. You will not find a single statement about "univesal" human rights anywhere before that. You may find some statements about particular groups (all romans are great, all christians are fantastic) but nothing more than that.

Finally, one interactor claims that islam did not have slaves! This is utter rubbish. Islam not only sanctioned slavery under many contexts, muslim slave traders pioneered and created the market for black slaves for over a 1000 years. Till the early 19th century you could purchase a black slave in Arabia for a small sum. The other source of slaves in islam is women and children taken captive in war. Women taken in war could be used as sexual slaves for the winners. This is the historical context of the mass rapes in Darfur and earlier in Bangladesh.
